Dear Mrs. Boutilier:
For my capstone project I decided to start a collection drive for the South Park Inn homeless shelter. I also plan to volunteer there too. I will be hosting a collection drive at the Sport and Medical Sciences Academy. I will be collecting men’s t-shirts, socks, flip flops, and deodorant. I will put boxes in all the advisory room’s starting October 4th- October 18th and the class that has the most donations will receive Dunkin Donuts, the donuts were donated by the Farmington Company. I chose this because I’ve started to notice more that there are always homeless people holding signs at the end of fast food drive-thru or at the end of highways asking for money, or sleeping in parks. I always felt sad at seeing people have to live like that so I wanted to do something to help. I’ve also always wondered why don’t they go to homeless shelters and I realized that the shelters may be over capacity and running out of supplies to care for all the people that come in everyday. So I emailed a woman that works at the South Park Inn homeless shelter in Hartford, CT and I got notified about the many supplies the shelter needs. I am also doing this as my capstone because I hope this makes people aware that homelessness can affect anyone and can happen to anyone. I also hope that volunteering in a homeless shelter can make a difference in the lives of the people that live and also work at the shelter so they can see that there are still some youth that care about the community and notice what’s going on around them and want to help. The personal stretch I want this project to help me make is to become more outgoing and more of a leader to prepare me for the career field I am interested in.
My research question is: What is the problem of homelessness in CT and America and what are the factors that contribute to homelessness? My capstone relates to this because I will be collecting donations to give to people that live in a homeless shelter, I will also be volunteering in a homeless shelter and I’ll be able to meet and talk to the people that live there. It could also help me and others know the many causes of homelessness and maybe give us insight of what we as a community can do to help people that are experiencing homelessness. For my artifacts I will be taking pictures and maybe videos of my volunteer work. I will also be getting publicity around school and my community about my collection drive by having a student who’s capstone is an Instagram page to help others post about all the details.
My mentor is Kandyce Aust, she use to work at the South Park Inn Homeless Shelter. I chose her to be my mentor because I have been connecting with her through email back and forth to start my collection drive for the shelter. Also chose her because in the past she has worked with SMSA seniors and has helped them with their capstone projects. She will be helping me with volunteering at the shelter and answering any questions I may have.
Sincerely,
Tylis Broaden
